Since its release in November 2022, ChatGPT has made international headlines. While concerns have been raised that ChatGPT and generative AI may be used as a tool for cheating, department lecturers Markus Lahtinen and Björn Svensson challenges this fear by actively incorporating the chatbot into the department’s educational program.

“Integrating ChatGPT into our education is simply a matter of survival; we need to get our students familiar with this technological advancement”, said Markus Lahtinen.

Björn Svensson is already working on assignments that would require the answers to be entirely written by the chatbot.

“There is a bit of a before and after ChatGPT”, he said.

Both lecturers believe that oral exams and in-class exams may be a way forward to assess the students’ understanding of the subject matter, as well as being a means to remedy overreliance on AI-robots for help. They also emphasize the importance of critical thinking and asking the right questions when using the chatbot.

“It’s a bit like it ‘takes knowledge, to generate useful knowledge’ from the chatbot”, Markus Lahtinen says.
