13TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PERSPECTIVES IN BUSINESS INFORMATICS RESEARCH – 22–24 SEPTEMBER 2014

Workshop 1: Building a Smarter Planet with the Internet of Things

A smarter planet requires cities and organizations of all sizes to capitalize on new technologies and insights to transform their systems, operations and service delivery. Cloud for collaboration among disparate agencies. Mobile to gather data and address problems directly at the source. Social technologies for better engagement with citizens. Being smarter can change the way cities and organizations work and help deliver on their potential as never before.

One area of technology is binding everything together, the Internet of Things (IoT), represents an evolution in which objects are capable of interacting with other objects. Hospitals can monitor and regulate pacemakers long distance, factories can automatically address production line issues and hotels can adjust temperature and lighting according to a guest's preferences, to name just a few examples. Furthermore, as the number of devices connected to the Internet continues to grow exponentially, an organization's ability to send, receive, gather, analyze and respond to events from any connected device increases as well.

This workshop aims to introduce smarter technology that effectively make it possible to take advantage of the possibilities that Internet of Things offer. Specific focus will be on practices how to easily connect objects. A number of examples will be introduced during the session.

Workshop 2: Developing s Smarter City app with IBM DevOps Services and Bluemix

Today’s cloud is about more than expanding reach. It’s about expanding possibility. Once, cloud was simply the tool you used to access your files from anywhere, and to make your operations more efficient. Today, it’s an incubator of ideas that can help you continually test, adjust and deploy new innovations more nimbly than ever before.

This workshop will introduce you to the next wave of platforms where you can easily collaborate across the globe, or be a hero, to build, test, deploy and manage new solutions in the cloud rapidly. Such solutions could be apps of all kinds, for example web or mobile apps.

In this workshop we will look at a web application on the Smarter City theme which is developed using Dev Ops Services and which runs on Bluemix. Afterwards you will be able to build your own applications using these tools and platforms.
